Brána Pusteven
The mountains were given a threshold here: a building, a bell tower and a path portal, where people get out of the car and off the bus.
Pustevny begins here
At the end of the single access road to Pustevny stands Brána Pusteven.
Inside there is an information centre with a waiting room, light refreshments and public toilets; beside the building are the car park facilities and the bus turning circle. Across the road stands a bell tower with the portal of a forest path – together a symbolic threshold through which you enter Pustevny.

The story of Brána Pusteven
An information centre on one side of the road, a bell tower with a portal on the other.
Why it was built
Traffic outgrew the saddle
Pustevny is one of the most visited places in the Beskids – on foot, by bike and by car. A car park already stood at the end of the access road, but scheduled buses still drove all the way up into the saddle, where they met walkers and cyclists.
The municipality of Prostřední Bečva therefore moved the bus stop down from the saddle to the car park. The new stop with its turning circle called for facilities of its own – and so Brána Pusteven was built beside the car park.
The composition
A building, a bell tower and a path portal
Brána Pusteven is not a single building – the composition spreads across both sides of the road. On one side stands the building with its facilities, between the car park and the bus turning circle; on the other, a bell tower and the portal of the forest path that leads into the woods towards the Radhošť ridge.
In material and shape, the bell tower recalls old mountain architecture, although it is as new as the building – both went up as one project in 2024. Between the bell tower and the building lies a paved area with seating beneath mature beeches; together these elements form the symbolic gateway where Pustevny begins.
The building

Brána Pusteven was designed by the studio henkai architekti (Daniel Baroš, Michal Vašek, Jan Šimíček) for the municipality of Prostřední Bečva. The project was drawn up between 2019 and 2022, the building was completed in 2024 and officially opened on 11 January 2024.
The building is a timber frame structure founded on micropiles and roofed with glued trusses; the pitched roof has a diagonal ridge. The facade is clad in wooden shingles - a nod to the traditional building technique of the mountains, familiar from Jurkovič's lodges up in the saddle.
Mountain plants grow on the roof, tying the building to the meadows around it; the sandstone paving and walls refer to the bedrock of the Beskids. The 164 m² of floor space hold the information centre with its waiting room, the car park facilities, public toilets and a covered terrace sheltering the bus stop – the building stands on the edge of the slope, and Čertův mlýn is visible from the terrace.
