What now passes for the natural look of the Beskids is largely the work of one architect. Both lodges at Pustevny were standing before 1900; the lookout tower above Rožnov went up only recently, from designs of his that were more than a hundred years old.
The Beskid ridges rest on soft bedrock and are slowly sliding over it. Where a slope has pulled open, there is a cave with no water in it, a stone table indistinguishable from a dolmen and a beech wood strewn with sandstone blocks.
The richest nature in the Beskids is not wilderness. Orchids, gladioli and peat bogs hold on here because the ground was mown and grazed for centuries – and when that stopped, human work had to save them all over again.
